Twelve Days of PlayStation

While I was Christmas shopping at the Manchester Arndale Centre last year, I stopped by the Calendar Club shop (which is next door to the HMV store) to check if there is a new Little Mix calendar. As I browsed through the racks, I stumbled upon a PlayStation calendar among the other video game calendars (Call of Duty, Super Mario, Nintendo Entertainment System, Pokémon and The Legend of Zelda, to name a few). To be honest, I thought nothing of it until I turned the calendar over. What caught my eye is a thumbnail of Ratchet & Clank adorned it (along with numerous thumbnails of franchises I don’t care about). This caused me to squeal like a fangirl, I can barely keep myself together and I can hardly contain myself. I assumed no one heard me but the elderly, female shopkeeper clearly caught wind of my fangirlish squeal of delight. Surely enough, I eventually uncovered a Little Mix calendar but Ratchet & Clank already won me over.

The line-up is admittedly a sad sight where nearly every franchise is unmemorable.

The PlayStation calendar showcases top-of-the-line, masterclass franchises such as Bloodborne, God Of War, Ratchet & Clank, Shadow Of The Colossus, The Last Guardian, Uncharted, Wipeout Omega Collection, Horizon Zero Dawn, Gran Turismo (The Real Driving Simulator), Days Gone, Detroit Become Human and The Last Of Us: Part II in ascending order.

I know I’m biased but I’d say Ratchet & Clank is the highlight of the entire calendar. In fact, it’s the sole reason why I bought the calendar in the first place. I’m not going to lie when I say I squealed like a fangirl when I suddenly spotted Ratchet & Clank at the back of the calendar, amidst the other video game series. I didn’t expect my current favourite video game franchise to be presented in the PlayStation line-up, especially when it’s sadly underrated in contrast to the other overrated franchises (except for Little Big Planet). To be frank, the PlayStation brand is oversaturated with mature, gritty, post-apocalyptic and unsettling franchises I can care less about. For a calendar which costs under £10, it’s a reasonable price. It’s a smart move for Calendar Club or Carousel Calendars to add Ratchet & Clank to the PlayStation roster otherwise I would’ve purchased a different calendar.

Ratchet & Clank – the undisputed highlight of the whole calendar.

My main major negative complaint is Calendar Club or Carousel Calendars should’ve picked characters that better defined the PlayStation brand such as Spyro The Dragon, Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, PaRappa The Rapper, Lara Croft from Tomb Raider, Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid and Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII, to name a few. If they consider making a 2020 calendar, I hope they take my criticisms into account.

Some people may view Uncharted as the poor man’s Tomb Raider.

I know it’s a tall order and there’s only so much you can include in a 12-month calendar.

No one is going to remember the characters from Bloodborne, God Of War, Shadow Of The Colossus, The Last Guardian, Uncharted, Wipeout Omega Collection, Horizon Zero Dawn, Gran Turismo (The Real Driving Simulator), Days Gone, Detroit Become Human and The Last Of Us: Part II in 10+ years time. In my opinion, non-human characters are more familiar than human characters. Human characters are all the same, despite every human have differing heights, weights, widths, race, skin colours etc. The characters in these mature franchises may be iconic by modern standards but will gamers, casuals and normal, regular people remember them in the countless years to come?

Out of all the franchises featured in the calendar, only Ratchet & Clank and Little Big Planet 3 (despite I only played the Little Big Planet 2 demo) are recognisable.

It’s a shame Little Big Planet didn’t make it into the 2019 calendar.

If Ratchet & Clank isn’t included in the calendar, I would’ve picked a Little Mix or Cheryl (ex-Girls Aloud member) calendar instead. If Ratchet & Clank is absent, there isn’t an incentive to purchase the calendar. I’d put in my two-penny worth when it comes to the Super Mario series but I’m already burnt out on buying Mario calendars almost every year. The same applies for any Nintendo calendar.

I reckon the PlayStation calendar will benefit from a handle in akin to the white handle attached to the top of the Little Mix Official 2018 Calendar. A handle is perfect to pin up any calendar to a wall.

Below every artwork corresponding with each franchise are two pictures depicting a game from every franchise respectively. For example, Ratchet & Clank represents March. Above the grid are two photos showing a Z-Grute terrorising Luminopolis and Ratchet, Clank, Captain Qwark and Dr. Nefarious traversing through an icy, snowy location from Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One.

Despite the abysmal selection of franchises, I like how the transparent PlayStation logo contains Aloy, Kratos, Sackboy, Nathan Drake, Ratchet and Ellie in clockwise order. Only one character I don’t know the name of.

In clockwise order: Aloy, Kratos, (a character I don’t know the name of), Sackboy, Nathan Drake, Ratchet and Ellie.

In spite of this one particular glaring nitpick, there is something for every PlayStation fan (despite I can’t stress enough that most of the characters and the franchises are kind of unfamiliar).

On the bright side, this calendar marks Ratchet & Clank’s first appearance in a calendar for the first time in eight years. Apparently, a Ratchet & Clank 2010 calendar is released on 18th August 2009 according to the Ratchet Galaxy website.

Speaking of Ratchet & Clank, honestly I wish it represented November (my birthday month) instead of Detroit Become Human.

Little Big Planet may not made it into the line-up but at least it managed to make an appearance in the calendar as a whole with its own mini calendar for 2020. However, it won’t be beneficial when I want to purchase a new calendar at the end of 2019.

Will I recommend the PlayStation 2019 calendar regardless? It depends on which PlayStation franchise you’re interested in and if you’re a PlayStation fan in general. Lest your favourite franchise isn’t featured in the aforementioned calendar, you’re better off skipping it. There’s room for improvement (in the character selection department) but the aforesaid calendar doesn’t deserve top marks as a result.

*Many thanks to Ryan Brown from Numbskull Designs (and RubberRoad) for sending me two free samples of the official Crash Bandicoot merchandise range*

Don a pair of jeans, sport a pair of old-school red and white trainers/sneakers and whisk yourself to the N. Sanity Islands to run, jump, spin and smash (and laugh in terms of the side-splittingly hilarious, cartoony death animations) your way down memory lane!

To celebrate the first anniversary of Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy and its recent release on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PC, Numskull Designs collaborated with Activision once again to launch a second wave of their merchandise brand of officially licensed Crash Bandicoot merchandise.

Flashback to last year, Numskull Designs (and RubberRoad) and Activision formed together to release their first wave of the merchandise to coincide with the original release of the PlayStation 4 version of Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy on 30th June 2017.

Whether you’re taking a breather from enduring the latest fury-inducing DLC level, Future Tense, from the Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy remastered version of Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped, you’re a life-long Crash Bandicoot fan or you’re elated due to Crash’s long-awaited, highly-anticipated comeback, you can commemorate this special occasion in style and you go no wrong with rockin’ a snapback cap tailored to suit any die-hard fans’ head sizes or taking a whiff of the “Wumpa Fruit-scented” candle for instance.

Light up this candle for an authentic aroma of Wumpa Fruits.

However, the Wumpa Fruit candle smells more fruity and tropical or like a combination of apple and mango than actual Wumpa Fruit. In fact, the scent of Wumpa Fruit has always been left as a mystery considering they’re fictional fruit. Therefore, how they taste like is up for speculation.

Their ambition is to let their fanbase and newcomers to the video game fandom to feel like they are actually included in the aforesaid game’s development.

Tri-Heart Interactive claims to be a community driven company.

Throughout game development, they document via dev diaries, community events and Q&As to keep their fans and potential, upcoming players informed of their progress. Besides the abovementioned game development, they give other game developing teams, artists and players the opportunity to flaunt off their work, share their accounts and experiences through their monthly interview and features on their pages. Not to mention, providing a platform for the video game studios, artists and gamers to honour their passion.

The Otterman Empire isn’t your typical, nitty and gritty, triple A generic shooter. In fact, it’s completely the opposite. It’s a family-friendly, split screen, first-person shooter featuring humanoid, anthropomorphic space otters that shoot fish at each other and said game is set in the vast expanses of outer space. It can be comparable to the likes of Ratchet & Clank, Jak And Daxter (though, Jak 2: Renegade, Jak 3 and Daxter are up for debate in regards to whether they are unrealistic, cartoony shooters or not), Rad Rodgers, Conker’s Bad Fur Day, Conker: Live & Reloaded, Splatoon, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle and the recent Iconoclasts, to name a few, in terms of family-friendly or cartoonish shooters.

Two space otters battling it out in an outer space setting.

Players create teams of team-based characters to better suit their play style and their skills. The main objective is to fire your (fish-shaped) weapons at the opposing team. As your team and the enemy group are locked in gun combat, the health bar depletes while the fish makes contact with you and your partner. The same can be said about the members of the opposing squad. If it reaches zero, you’ll respawn at a chosen or random spot in the map but it depends on which map is picked. Whichever team collected the most points at the end of the match emerges victorious. Speaking of the teams, the characters are split into two teams, which are represented by the red and blue colours respectively.

Each team needs to deplete each other’s health in order to score points.

If my memory serves me correctly, according to my experience with The Otterman Empire at Play Expo Manchester 2017 (a yearly video game convention that takes place at Event City, which is practically next door to the Trafford Centre, and run by Replay Events), I must enter bodies of water to refill my water-powered jetpack and the ammunition (the ammo are fish) of my firearms.

Judging by my gaming experience with it, the controls are clunky but that’s understandable since the game is still in development and the snippet/demo of the game I interacted with at the time doesn’t represent the final product and it’s hard to tell which character I’m playing as due to how the controller is connected to the computer. Despite I don’t give a hoot about graphics and I tend to consider graphics as not the most important thing in gaming (besides, photo realistic graphics or highly-detailed, top of the line graphics does not mean a fantastic game), the fur feels a bit off and looking at the fur in a visual perspective, they are similar to their appearance in a PlayStation 2 or a Nintendo Gamecube game. I mean this is 2018 we’re talking about here and comparing the fur of the space otter characters to the fur effects in any PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4 game, this is embarrassing.

As game development of The Otterman Empire progresses over time, the indie company releases a snippet or a demo of the game every month for their audience to play. Once a snippet is distributed, they listen to their community in order to gather feedback on how the game should be made with them in mind and what kind of content should be included in it.

Each month, the company sends out a demo for their audience.

In spite of my nitpicking, I’m a sucker for anthropomorphic, humanoid animals, the harmless, family-friendly atmosphere of this game is what pulled me in regardless of the fact I absolutely hate shooting games (whether they’re first-person, third-person or mainstream, run of the mill, stale, triple A shooters) with every fibre of my being, the sci-fi futuristic setting interested me and I’m intrigued on what this game has to offer in the future.

One of the countless maps gamers can duke it out in.

What is Manchester Gamers Unite, you may ask? It’s a non-profit, independent gaming and network organisation as well as a community driven group to boot run by Simran Whitham (SimranWhitham from Twitter and simran_whitham from Instagram) and Steph Staszko (SugarAndGames from Twitter and sugarandgames from Instagram) at the Dive Bar NQ within the Northern Quarter in Manchester where indie video game developers, already-established, renowned, triple A video game companies such as PlayStation and Ubisoft and gamers gather one night a month as one massive community to drink beverages, alcohol or soft drinks, enjoying refreshments, having fun, meeting, greeting and mingling with each other, try out the latest games currently in development that aren’t released yet created by other studios and show them off to the masses.

My main, major gripes with the Manchester Gamers Unite events are the aforementioned events tend to finish at the late hours of the night during the weekdays and despite Manchester Gamers Unite have a much friendlier atmosphere and community than Nintendo Manchester (formerly known as StreetPass Manchester. The less said about the insufferable toxicity of this unfriendly, unwelcoming group, the better. To be honest, they’re one of the main reasons why I’m starting to dislike Nintendo and why I reckon I’m too old for Nintendo which quite frankly, I’m NOT sorry for being open about why I don’t hold Nintendo in high regard anymore. I got to say what I got to say), people have a tendency to not allow strangers into their small circles according to one of my friends… well, if that’s a way of explaining about this. As a result of the aforesaid events ending at a later time, I can only stay at them for a few hours due to the fact the more I stay out late, the less buses there will be which in turn means returning to my home safely will prove to be difficult. Why people like to stay out for long periods of time during the night, I’ll never know. Lastly, the abovementioned events have an appalling selection of video games available to play which caused me to become bored beyond belief. It pains me to say, “Wouldn’t it kill for Manchester Gamers Unite to showcase a variety of games with various game genres?” I’m a long-time platformer connoisseur and a life-long veteran of platforming games and it would be nice if Manchester Gamers Unite and the developers could present indie platformers (and kart-racing video games), old-school platformers (or go kart-racing games), or triple A platforming (and kart-racing games) for once. In my opinion, I’d prefer Manchester Gamers Unite to host the events during the day in the weekends and end them at reasonable times like let’s say, 6 o’clock or 7 o’clock, for instance. Nevertheless, they have room for improvement.

My alternatives to community groups like this are the Animeleague community and the NW Cosplay community considering their cosplay events are held in the daytime during the weekend. If you want to stay until the end of a Manchester Gamers Unite event, by all means but don’t blame me when there will be a lack of public transport when the abovementioned event ends.

Speaking of Simran Whitham, he attended Futureworks to study a video games design course as well as hosting the Manchester Gamers Unite group alongside with his partner in crime, Steph Staszko, and being the founder and the leader of Tri-Heart Interactive. This goes to show how much he have come so far.

At the moment, this game isn’t slated for release on PlayStation 4, XBox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, Linux, Mac, Steam etc yet and the dates are yet to be confirmed. At the time of writing, it’s still in development right now.

The untold story of a creative, innovative, fiercely-independent gaming scene that was serially ignored by the outside world

As a member of the PC master race, I always was curious about Mac Gaming, so I backed this book by Richard Moss a few months ago. Can’t wait to get a quiet day and read it all and write a full review. However, I managed to skim through the pages and it’s actually quite impressive. The author himself states that he started working on this book about four years ago and it draws on archive materials as well as 60+ new interviews with key figures from Mac gaming’s past.

This will undoubtedly be interesting for gamers , game devs and even some researchers (I did both of my dissertations on gaming culture ;)).

You can get a digital copy for only £10 here.

We currently live in a world where nostalgia sell like hot cakes and there’s been a resurgence of open-world, 3D platformers lately, so it comes as no surprise OhiraKyou is jumping at the chance of creating his/her own platforming game influenced by the olden years of cutesy mascot platforming yore. If Breakerbox Studios’ Griff The Winged Lion and SPARK Games’ Ascent isn’t your cup of tea when it comes to upcoming Spyro-esque indie games, then Nytro might be up your street. Nytro is a forthcoming indie game inspired by Spyro, obviously, and a free-to-play MMO game called Flyff (hence the mechanical or futuristic setting or theme) instead of Ratchet & Clank, believe it or not.

The cold doesn’t bother me: Nytro can withstand the cold temperatures of the ice world.

Regarding the title, the game stars the titular main protagonist named Nytro, which is a robotic cat and is accompanied by a tiny, floating, motorised rabbit with a name, which isn’t revealed yet. According to OhiraKyou, despite the mechanised cat possesses the same mannerisms as his/her female cat, the aforesaid character isn’t referred to as any gender.

If you played Spyro The Dragon, Spyro 2: Gateway To Glimmer and Spyro 3: Year of the Dragon developed by Insomniac Games of Disruptor, Ratchet & Clank series, Sunset Overdrive and Resistance series fame, then you know the drill. Similar to Spyro, Nytro’s moveset consists of a jump, run/sprint move, a jet-powered charge which propels it into a breakneck fast pace thanks to the robotic feline’s jetpack or afterburners, a hover skill, a electric breath (upon using it, it causes a chain reaction which explodes all of the containers, one by one), a glide ability that covers long distances between platforms and the capability of swimming underwater. In addition, it can charge underneath the surface of the water but it came at a price: it deprived it of its electric breath. In spite neither cats nor robots develop a liking towards water, you’ll be relieved to know the cat isn’t afraid to shed off its fear and enter a body of water. The main collectibles of the game are silver bolts and golden gears (identical to the ones from a recent retro-inspired, Mario-esque 3D platformer, Poi) which can be acquired out in the open, in the water or accumulating them upon smashing wooden baskets and metal containers or vases into pieces.

Golden Gears are the equivalent to the Gold Bolts from the Ratchet & Clank series.

At the moment, there isn’t a confirmed storyline and the main antagonist isn’t revealed yet. As the gameplay implies, you as Nytro must hop from platform to platform (the size, height, width and shapes of the platforms vary from level to level and homeworld to homeworld), breathe electricity, charge, hover, glide/fly and swim your way through an abundant of levels and worlds and gather all of you can muster.

In Halloween-themed Scrapyard, a zombie is stalking after a holographic ghost.

Along with a hub world which is featured in the demo, there are countless portals scattered all over the place that serve as gateways to other levels or locations, each with their own themes (depending on the current level you’re in), non-playable characters, tasks, side quests etc.

Despite being a robotic cat, Nytro isn’t fazed by the water.

I can’t stress this enough but just because a game have low polygons doesn’t make it a terrible game. To make matters worse, people like my ignorant, (bully) of a younger sister judges a game before its release which is deemed to be wrong, unfair, biased, uncalled for and being one-sided. If she continues to claim video games with low-res and low polygons are immediately mediocre, then I feel sorry for her. And I use the words, “feel sorry”, very loosely. A video game with high-resolution, detailed polygons or 4K graphics doesn’t always make it a fantastic game. It’s heartbreaking that a myriad of indie games are overlooked when compared to AAA blockbuster games. At the end of the day, graphics aren’t always everything. To put this simply, don’t judge a game by its gameplay, its graphics or anything for that matter. I still regret making this mistake in the past with the Ratchet & Clank series to this day.

It’s saddening this current generation of gamers only care about graphics alone. So sad.

Gamers and ordinary people shouldn’t judge a game by its graphics, gameplay etc.

If you’re curious about what Nytro have to offer and you’re hankering for more, be sure to follow OhiraKyou on Twitter to keep up to date, visit the aforementioned developer’s official website (the demo can be found on the abovementioned website) and don’t forget to support the game on Patreon to ensure it reaches the end of its development.

After writing a blog about Northern Rail and their appalling customer service, I thought that I should write about the opposite: Telcom, my internet service provider (ISP), is probably the best example of fantastic customer service, so this post will be about them.

When I moved to Manchester, I realised that I couldn’t take my Virgin Media fibre contract with me, as Virgin doesn’t cover this area. As such, I decided to switch to Sky Broadband (not much of a choice, as there was no alternative). Sky offered “super-fast” ADSL that would take a day to download the latest update for ARK – in theory. In reality, it took three days, since the connection would drop every time someone else in the building used the lift. No, really; this is a genuine problem.

It took me over a month of constant calls with Sky, and going through this stupid “turn it off and turn it back on again” procedure with their customer service (who also kept referring to Megabits as Megabytes), before they actually sent around an engineer who confirmed that poor wiring in the lift shaft was the problem.

One day, I noticed a Telcom Velocity poster in the hallway of our apartment block. I wrote their website address down, did some research, and eventually signed up for a contract with them. Needless to say, I terminated my Sky contract.

Telcom turned out to be even better than Virgin Media. I won’t even compare it to Sky’s broadband. We get a stable 150 Mbps for download and upload; while Virgin caps your upload speed to about 7Mbps. Telcom’s routers are also super fancy, it’s a Tp-Link Archer C5 with USB ports and excellent coverage that is all included in your monthly bill (with Virgin, I had to pay extra for Superhub 3.0).

The router manages to handle two hard drives, and a Smart bulb hub on top of many other devices that connect via WiFi. I even run an ARK server on this router, with no issues for me or for other players!

Another great thing about Telcom? Their customer service.

When I joined Telcom, they ran a competition on Twitter, asking people to tweet them a photo of black cabs with Telcom promotional vinyl on them. I participated and got this, delivered personally by a member of their own staff to my door:
