Full Confession: Lara Croft has always been a source of strength for me to look to whenever things got difficult, and she also is the first person to come to mind when I think of my personal role model. All three incarnations of her have made a big impact on me as a person as well. In all honesty, I’m sincerely happy to see a 20 year old franchise still continue on strong today despite all the obstacles it took in order to do so.

Full Confession:

“I’m still scarred for life from what I was told in year 8 in high school.  In which I had a conversation with some male friends I knew since primary school.  I felt awkward being the only girl on the table, and depressed because all my friends were in the higher level classes.   We spoke about  what video game we play and I said I loved Tomb Raider.  I talked of how you can engage with the environments, multiple weapons, and her intelligence.  Until I was told “Tomb Raider is a boys game, that’s why she has massive boobs”.  Everyone laughed at me, and it shattered my confidence.   

It from here I actually stopped playing the Tomb Raider games, it killed me inside and I felt so guilty the amount of money my mum had wasted on me. I look back and see how silly this is.  But a few year later after suffering from sever bullying I dug around our computer games and became determined to complete Tomb Raider 2.  Playing the game I could escape and gain back this confidence.

I felt isolated as none of my friends loved tomb raider the way I did they couldn’t see past Lara’s appearance.  But I decided why should I let other decide what I can and cant like, it made me happy. 

I’m proud to say that I am now the proud owner of a life size Lara Croft statue and over 300 pieces of memorabilia, written a university dissertation on Lara Croft, and have an amazing boyfriend who supports my collection some people think I’m weird and other think It’s an interesting hobby .

Lara has allowed me to see past all the negativity and bullies and show me I am the one true person who can make me happy.  I don’t let people put me down and the more people mock me the more determination it gives me to collect.”

Full Confession:

The Tomb Raider reboot in 2013 came into my life at a time when I needed it the most. I had just graduated from my masters degree into a terrible job market, I couldn’t get a job and made the decision to carry on looking after my mother. During this time, I got back into gaming and started cosplay as a way to build structure into my day. My reboot Lara costume and the game means so much to me because of this; it provided comfort and aspiration at a time when I felt my life was going nowhere. As I knock on effect, I managed to get interviews and job opportunities which all stem back to that one costume and the game. I honestly wouldn’t be where I am now in my career and life without it, that to me is crazy! But I am so thankful! ~Helen (Lady Scion)

Full Confession

It was 1997, i had just broken free from an abusive and controlling relationship, i felt worthless and destroyed. I couldn’t eat, face people or go to work, i was completely lost. A mutual friend sent TR home to me via a family member with the words ’ tell your sister to play this’. I fired up my PS One and was totally blown away – it was like nothing i had ever played before – Lara encapsulated me – she was so real. I admit I struggled, I’d never played anything in this league before – I’d spent many an hour wired up to a MegaDrive but this was something else.

The puzzles were so good and at times I was stuck for hours.  There was no internet to check for a speedy solution so I just had to figure it out for myself.  It was the best therapy I could have wished for.  From the moment Lara appeared I felt bonded, that I wasn’t alone in the world anymore and I had a friend. 

Every day I would wake and play TR and each day I felt a little bit stronger.  The music was so beautiful it signified a safe place to journey and lose myself. With each puzzle I solved I felt more accomplished, each foe I slayed; represented me taking control over my demons.  By the time the game ended I was in a much better place.

So yeah TR has always been a very personal experience for me.  :D”

Full confession:

Classic Lara kept me from committing suicide multiple times, simple as that. Whenever I was having a bad day or feeling overwhelmed by life in general, I sat down and wrote fanfictions/drabbles or played the games. I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t obsessed with her, when she didn’t inspire me to push forward and dream big, no matter my current circumstances or boundaries. Because of her, I got into extreme sports, into martial arts, into climbing and diving and bouldering. Because of her, I am now studying classical archaeology – and thanks to her, I’m not afraid anymore. I’m still alive and forever grateful to Core for giving me hope and someone to look up to when I had nothing and no one.
